Practice

The practice focuses on litigation for film, television, music, media, technology and consumer brands. Each area below draws on the same core: trial and motion work in contested, time-sensitive disputes.

01

When a production, a catalogue or a format becomes the subject of a dispute, I act for the people who made it, financed it or distribute it. The work runs from urgent motions through trial and appeal.

Typical work

  • Rights and ownership disputes over film, television and music
  • Format, treatment and idea-theft claims
  • Disputes between producers, financiers, distributors and talent
  • Injunctions to stop, or to clear the way for, a release
03

A brand is often a company’s most valuable asset and its most copied one. I litigate to protect marks, trade dress and reputation, and defend clients accused of crossing the line.

Typical work

  • Trademark infringement and passing off
  • Depreciation of goodwill and counterfeit enforcement
  • Expungement and Section 45 proceedings
  • Domain name and online marketplace disputes
04

Speech disputes move quickly and reputations do not wait for trial. I advise and litigate for publishers, broadcasters, producers and individuals, including on anti-SLAPP motions under the Courts of Justice Act.

Typical work

  • Defamation claims and defences, online and in print
  • Anti-SLAPP motions
  • Privacy, publicity and misappropriation of personality
  • Pre-publication and pre-broadcast review
05

When confidential business information is taken, the first days matter most. I bring and defend urgent motions for injunctions and preservation orders, and pursue the claims that follow.

Typical work

  • Interlocutory and interim injunctions
  • Breach of confidence and misuse of trade secrets
  • Departing employee and competing business disputes
  • Preservation and evidence-recovery orders
06

Most entertainment disputes are contract disputes at heart. I litigate the commercial agreements that hold creative businesses together, along with the business torts and fraud claims that sometimes come with them.

Typical work

  • Licensing, distribution and co-production agreements
  • Talent, management and agency disputes
  • Business torts and civil fraud
  • Shareholder and partnership disputes in creative companies
07

The cheapest dispute is the one that never starts. Drawing on what actually gets litigated, I help clients assess risk before a release, a rebrand or a deal closes.

Typical work

  • Clearance and risk review before release
  • Chain-of-title review for financing and E&O
  • Cease-and-desist strategy, sending and responding
  • Dispute risk assessment for transactions
08

Third-party funding is now part of Canadian litigation. I advise claimants on how funding works and what it costs, and act in funded matters with the transparency funders and courts expect.

Typical work

  • Structuring and negotiating funding arrangements
  • Acting for funded claimants
  • Court approval and disclosure issues
  • Assessing claims for funding

Most disputes cross more than one of these areas. A short description is enough to start; I will respond after a conflicts check.
